Let's break the ice

On Friday the 11th of February, before heading to the indoor ice skating rink in Breda, we agreed to meet at Biertuin for a drink. I came a bit late and the place was very crowded. After looking around for a bit, I finally found the boys sitting on the elevated table, just next to the big speakers. It seemed to me that the music had put them in the right mood, as they were a bit tipsy already and in a good party mood. As for me – still being level-headed, I had some catch-up work to do.

From the city center, a 4-kilometer bike ride was necessary in order to get to the ice skating rink. When slowly leaving the city center behind, we encountered other ESSET students on their way to the same destination. We traveled all together, which made the ride very pleasant. When arriving, we were surprised by the size of the rink, which consisted of an outer track with long straight lanes encircling an inner track, where a relaxing atmosphere was created with music and disco lights. From the outside, we were excited to see teams of ice skaters sliding at impressive speeds.

The Zamboni had just smoothened the track, making the first steps on the ice just a bit harder for those who hadn’t exercised the sport in a while. Personally, I felt like a clown on skates in the beginning but made progress as time passed. Other students were similarly able to improve their moves and found their best-flowing paces quickly. By the end, most students went to the inner track to try out some ice dancing, at least, that was what it was looking like from a distance. I settled for some final sprints on the outer track. We skated for a good two hours until the closure of the ice skating rink.

It seemed that everyone who participated enjoyed their time with the others. Considering the way this event was organised by ESSENCE and the amount of ESSET students that showed up, this activity could be called a success!
